Let's go back to MAD MEN: why is advertising important?

Advertising is based on one thing: happiness. And you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It's freedom from fear. It's a billboard on the side of the road that screams with reassurance that whatever you're doing... it's okay.

That's my favorite explanation about Advertising from MAD MEN, I like that because it shows us the sense of humanity about Advertising.

With stiff competition in today's market, advertising plays an important role in reaching out to both existing and potential customers. Because customers are not aware of any new things or business without an effective advertising. With the help of advertising, consumers can make it easier to find their needs and also compare similar products from different brands. As Michael Brito said in his book: Your brand, the next media company---we live in a multi-screen economy. That's why we can not live without advertising, including paid media.

Paid media opportunities are much more finely segmented and targeted. Advertising, known as a common paid media like print or broadcast, is aiming at informing, persuading or reminding buyers. In the meanwhile, advertising allows a company to know their competitors because it can create a stable ground for launching a new product successfully into the market and let more customers know about that.

Melissa Wang(@melonaaade) talked about how to get advertising campaigns in her book that:

It may take a few campaigns to figure out the ingredients to a successful ad that will work on your desired audience(s), so don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the results that you want at first.

So there are THREE MOST IMPORTANT points I think why is advertising important:

  • Target ideal customers.

  • Sales Promotion.

  • Creates awareness.

Last but not least, I share a very entertaining and creative video I saw on Youtube. Epipheo Studios presents "How the Internet is Changing Advertising", a short history of communication and how the internet is a new medium that has thrown out the old rules of communication.
